Two views of the term
It will be useful for the expecting mothers at the very beginning of their happy way of carrying a baby under their heart to learn about two different views on the duration of pregnancy.
- The first is obstetric.
- The second is embryonic/fetal.
In the first case, the weeks of pregnancy start from the first day of the last menstruation. In the second one – from the conception.
Thus, the 3rd obstetric week of pregnancy and the 3rd week of pregnancy from conception are two completely different things. The difference between them is 14 days!
To get obstetric from the embryonic period, you need to add two weeks. That is, for example, the twenty-second embryonic week of pregnancy corresponds to the twenty-fourth obstetric week. Therefore, if you are interested in the “3rd week of pregnancy from conception”, please read the relevant information on the page “5th week of pregnancy”.
In our pregnancy calendar, we use only the obstetric method of reference, according to which the pregnancy has not actually occurred in the first two weeks (the woman’s body has been only preparing for fertilization). In obstetric terms, conception occurs at the turn of the second and third weeks.
There are some sites and forums for young parents on the Internet that post pregnancy calendars using the embryonic/fetal method of counting weeks. Therefore, it might be confusing. For example, in terms of weight and height of the unborn child at the supposedly the same term.
Our calendar was made by experienced gynecologists. We recommend you to use only verified and reliable information on the topic of healthy pregnancy. This concerns obtaining the necessary knowledge by both the future mother and the future father.
On our parent portal, thousands and millions of young spouses are extremely sensitive to the concepts of “pregnancy”, “motherhood”, “parenthood”; for them, the carrying of a New Person under the heart of a Woman is holy, joyful and desirable.
However, we want to consider all cases where a young woman sees two bars on a test. None of the types of contraception makes it possible to exclude tenths and hundredths of a percent probability of starting a new life. In other words, there could theoretically be girls among the readers of our calendar for whom pregnancy is undesirable for a number of reasons.
So, if a young woman never planned pregnancy, then the 3rd week of pregnancy is the time when the decision on abortion should be made in the next 14 days. Weigh the pros and cons. Take into account the opinion of your partner. And in the case of such decision, seek qualified medical assistance.
Feelings in the third week of pregnancy
According to the obstetric method, the hormonal adjustment of the woman’s body has just begun at the 3rd week of pregnancy. Nature gives rise to new sensations. They will show up in full force in the coming weeks.
The sense of smell of the expecting mother becomes particularly heightened; personal perception of smells that used to surround the woman is changed. Some of the familiar smells (for example, her spouse’s cologne) may annoy her and make her uncomfortable. Some everyday smells, on the contrary, attract attention and bring positive emotions.
Food preferences are changing. Taste receptors, as well as smell sensors, begin to perceive the usual foods and dishes differently; a woman may become particularly sensitive and picky. If a girl used to like semolina, now its taste can bring a lot of negative emotions and even anger. In January, you may want some summer berries, or some unexpected combinations such as sour cream with cucumbers and so on.
Hormones in the body of a pregnant woman make the receptors more sensitive, and her food preferences may become unexpected and bizarre.
In the next three to four weeks, the breast of the future mother becomes more sensitive and even painful to touch in the mammary glands. This is how nature prepares the woman for the upcoming lactation at the very beginning of her path to happy motherhood.
Drowsiness, weakness, mood swings, nausea, and vomiting as manifestations of early pregnancy toxicosis are also possible.
Signs of pregnancy at week 3 of the “delicate condition” are still expressed mildly, because everything is just beginning. Most likely, you have not yet experienced early toxicosis, abdominal pain, mood swings. A new life within you is just emerging.
Symptoms of pregnancy at the 3rd obstetric week are most likely not to cause any discomfort or troubles to the expectant mother. Enjoy this time!
Fetal development at the 3rd week of pregnancy
After ovulation, the mature cell enters the fallopian tube and remains there. During intercourse, one of millions of sperm cells achieves its goal and gets into the fallopian tube. Other cells are scattered along the road and don’t even reach the cervix of the fallopian tube.
What determines the sex of a new emerging life? Each cell has an X chromosome, and the sperm cell has an X chromosome or a Y chromosome.
1. When the X chromosome sperm penetrates the cell, it will be a girl;
2. If the sperm cell has a Y chromosome, there will be a boy.
Conception begins with the penetration of the sperm into the egg. The combination of the genetic material of the egg and the sperm forms a zygote. It, in turn, quickly undergoes the process of division. At first, it is divided into 2 cells, then into 4, then into 8, and up to 32 cells. By this time, the embryo is very small.
The fetus at the 3rd week of pregnancy is called the embryo (in the eighth obstetric week, the embryo becomes a fetus).
At the moment, the embryo is in a very small water bag with amniotic fluid. At this time, the embryo receives nutrition not from its mother’s body, but from the yolk sac, in which the process of blood formation now takes place.
A fertilized egg is usually fixed in the endometrium inside the uterus. However, there is an extremely small chance for the egg to settle elsewhere in the reproductive system of the woman, that is, outside the uterus, resulting in ectopic pregnancy. You may ask, where it can be if not in the womb? For example, in the fallopian tube, or on the ovary.
The probability of a fertilized egg to fix outside the uterus is extremely small.
What symptoms and signs can tell the expectant mother in the early stages about a possible extrauterine pregnancy?
1. Severe pain with increasing intensity.
2. The pain located not in the lower abdomen, but on the left or the right (that is, in the place of incorrect implantation of the embryo).
3. The pain increases during palpation of this area by a gynecologist.
Modern medicine in general and gynecology, in particular have achieved considerable heights and advanced accomplishments. Gentle methods of getting rid of extrauterine pregnancy have been already developed. The peculiarity of these methods is that the procedure does not interfere with the healthy course of pregnancy in the future.
In the early stages of pregnancy, or, more precisely in the first trimester, there is a chance of such problem as missed miscarriage. Medical science in general and gynecologists in particular call genetic defects the main cause of this pathology. In addition, infections in the expectant mother’s body, inflammatory processes or unhealthy lifestyle of a pregnant woman can also cause a missed miscarriage. If you suspect a missed miscarriage, you should promptly seek medical help.
Miscarriage is a spontaneous abortion.
Spontaneous abortion or miscarriage is the rejection of an embryo that has been already implanted in the endometrium of the uterus. This event is manifested by vaginal bleeding or persistent bloody discharge, sharp acute pain in the abdomen of the expectant mother and pulling lower back pain. The faster a woman responds to these symptoms, the sooner qualified medical assistance will be provided, which means that the consequences will be less severe.
Pain and cramps
Some women in this period experience mild and intermittent abdominal pain. Pulling, not sharp pain in the specified area is like discomfort, as before a menstrual cycle. This ache (we repeat, it is not acute or sharp, rather pulling and not intensive) is normal for the third obstetric week of pregnancy. It signals that:
1. The blastocyst prepares for implantation in the uterus;
2. In other words, the birth of a new life inside the future mother is about to begin.
3. Thus, everything is all right and there is no need of medical intervention.
Discharge at the 3rd obstetric week
Not all women feel hormonal changes in the third week, but only the most sensitive ones. Some can see bloody discharge. Do not leave it without attention, because such discharge may indicate a placental abruption or other possible problems. In this case, a pregnant woman should immediately seek qualified medical assistance.
Vaginal discharge at the third obstetric week should normally be colorless and odorless.
Mother Nature has wisely designed everything in the female body. If a girl wants to become a mother and a new life emerges in her womb (the blastocyst through the embryo and the embryo becomes a fetus, that is, an intrauterine baby), this means, according to the laws of Nature, that the Woman is already in a new status and very soon she will need to breastfeed her child. Therefore, in the early stages of pregnancy, the mammary glands of the expectant mother are already beginning preparations for the restructuring of their functions. The breasts, and especially the nipples, become very sensitive. Areolas can darken a little, the volume of the breast gradually increases, and veins appear on the skin as the organ is supplied with blood more intensively.
Fetal ultrasound at the 3rd week of pregnancy
Keep taking folic acid and prenatal vitamins. Keep track of nutrition and fluid intake. You should have given up bad habits already. Do not rush to do ultrasound; at this stage it is still not sufficiently informative. Even modern high-resolution sensors will not be able to visualize the embryo. The only indication for an ultrasound at the third obstetric week of pregnancy is specific symptoms to rule out ectopic pregnancy. In any case, consult a doctor. If we are talking about ultrasound images, the photo at the 3rd week of pregnancy (using the obstetric method of reference) is almost impossible to find on the Internet. It is still very early to use this method of examination.
Required studies and analyzes
At the very beginning of the first trimester of childbearing, in the third obstetric week of pregnancy, as we have said above, fertilization has just occurred, the embryo is still microscopic in size, and the expecting mother has not yet fully felt the changes in her body. Therefore, any research or analysis is premature, except for the actual pregnancy test. It is still too early to register at the women’s health clinic at the place of residence where your local gynecologist will accompany you throughout the entire nine months with observations and recommendations. That is, there is no medical specialist yet who could refer you to any tests or examinations.
A little later, at the 8th week of pregnancy, the gynecologist who observes the expectant mother will definitely recommend to undergo a series of medical studies:
1. full blood examination
2. feces analysis
4. HIV and Rh testing
5. analysis of hCG.
When we talk about the increased body temperature in early pregnancy, there are three possible events:
1. There is no need to do a pregnancy test if you regularly measure the basal temperature. If the latter is kept at around thirty-seven degrees Celsius for the last three days, then it is most likely that pregnancy has occurred.
2. If you measure body temperature under your arm and have noticed a slight increase from the normal temperature by four to five tenths of a degree, do not worry – this is only a consequence of the hormonal reorganization of the body.
3. But if the thermometer shows 37.5 degrees and above, it is most likely to have other reasons. Intoxication of the body due to a cold or viral infection is a possibility. Seek medical attention immediately.
Sex at the 3rd week of pregnancy
Any intimacy at the third obstetric week of pregnancy is not contraindicated by gynecologists. Of course, sex in the period of a “delicate condition” is permissible only with mutual consent. Above, we talked about the changed perception and mood swings of a pregnant woman, so the future father should be aware of these circumstances.
Some useful recommendations for the expecting mothers
In the happy period of carrying a child, a woman should follow a number of recommendations:
1. Give up active or passive smoking (including vaping) and alcoholic drinks. It is best to get rid of these bad habits at the planning stage of pregnancy, not later than three months before the intended conception. This applies to the future father as well.
2. A healthy lifestyle is impossible without a proper and balanced diet. We will tell more about the diet of a pregnant woman below.
3. Do not give up physical activity. Moderate loads in sports and physical exercises enrich the body with oxygen, improve blood circulation, and strengthen the immune system. The preferred sports for the next nine months are swimming, walking, yoga, and Pilates.
4. Give up completely or minimize the caffeinated beverages.
5. Avoid stressful situations, conflicts, worries, and negative emotions in general. Do not give in to fears and phobias – many of them are imaginary and unfounded. Get into joyful and happy mood to spend this time before meeting your baby!
Diet at the 3rd week of pregnancy
For the nervous system of an unborn child to develop properly, the expectant mother needs to eat enough folic acid (vitamin B9) throughout the first trimester (the first thirteen weeks of pregnancy). This trace mineral is contained in:
- fresh greens;
If the future mother suffers from early toxicosis, it is advisable to make the meals fractional and frequent – that is, five to six meals per day in small portions.
Try to give up fried, fat, spicy, and smoked food.
Meat and fish dishes are best steamed, boiled, or stew. Sweet drinks, soda and coffee are not good and should be avoided as possible. Also limit sweets in your diet.
Opt for wholemeal bread, various cereals and dairy products, salads from seasonal vegetables. Eat more berries, nuts, fruits, greens. Seafood is an excellent healthy source of protein for the body of a pregnant woman.
Remember that you should avoid eating possible allergens, such as:
- citrus fruits.
As for the drinks, go for teas, compotes, fresh fruit drinks, juices, and noncarbonated mineral water.
